Identifying all those who died in the Ermenonville crash was an enormous task because of the general confusion at Orly Airport and the last-minute rush for seats just before flight 981's departure. The Turkish Airlines passenger manifest contained dozens of inaccuracies: many of the victims’ names were spelled incorrectly and some didn’t appear on the list at all. For at least six weeks the police were not even certain of how many people had died. It took a painstaking inquires into twenty-one countries to produce the full catalog of victims.

Even now, after 34 years (1974-2008) I still remember that terrible accident from the news in Athens, Greece. I wish that tragic events like this one never happen again.

Two of my friends died in this crash, Bobby Hart and Clark Wilcox. Both just 12 years old. I have fond memories of playing baseball, going to movies and just being in some of the same classes together. Even after all this time, the recent plane crashes (Air France flight 447, etc) bring back the sad and happy memories of childhood to me. I hope investigators learn the causes of such crashes and that the airline industry will be proactive and correct any known problems.

I remember that my Grandad's neighbours in Hampstead were killed in this crash. Mother, father and three children. She was American, and some time before this, we had gone to Hampstead heath with the children. At the time, I don't think anyone I had met had died before. The sahdows of their faces haunt me even now, although I can't remember their faces or their names.
The Jackson family all attended our Church, St Andrews, in Frognal, Hampstead. The three children were in my Sunday. School class, and all died. I had the very sad task. Of meeting the. Parents of the family when they came over from America, and taking them to the family home. We have a memorial to the Wright family in the. Garden of St Andrews. RIP, Christine Whittall
